Is it fair?

Day 4:Making Promises
Activity 3: Restricted Access

On your blog, tell us what you think about the government’s decision to restrict the
number of tourists able to visit this special site. Is it fair? Be sure to tell us why you feel
the way that you do.

Well, to be honest, I think it is fair that he has done that. I think this statement because, I mean
Machu Picchu is very beautiful. Maybe the government doesn’t want anything to be littered on
or polluted. The average amount of people who would take a tour around Machu Picchu would
probably be taking food, and because they are taking food then the food would probably have
wrappers and tinfoil wrapped around it don’t you think? Another reason why I think it is fair
because, the government probably wanted to keep not just the mountain safe but the tourist too.
The way the government wanted to keep the tourist safe is by restricting this area so no one
would fall off. Keep the tourist safe is just as important then keeping the mountain safe.
Now, that you’ve heard a couple of my reason why I think the government decision was fair,
it's now time for you to decide.

Comment down below what you think about the government’s decision!

  1. Hi Jahzara,

It's Leslie here, a member of the Summer Learning Journey team. I'm reading your blog from my home in Canada where we're in the middle of a very snowy winter. Can you imagine that? It's amazing that we can live on opposite sides of the planet and yet participate in the same program!!

I think you've made a good argument in support of the Peruvian government's decision to limit the number of tourists that can visit Machu Piichu each year. There are real problems with allowing tourism in ancient spaces. As you say, dealing with rubbish is one problem. It's also true that the more people that walk on paths and roadways, the more those roads and pathways are worn down. Over time, they can become impassable. Also there are ancient stone walls and building foundations on this site and, with many tourists touching them and sitting on them etc., they can be worn away as well. If we want to keep special sites then we have to protect them from wear and tear.

There are perhaps some special places in New Zealand where there are concerns about having too many tourists. We have that concern here in Canada for sure. Tourism has advantages but also disadvantages. We have to learn ways of managing both...

I hope you had some adventures this summer, visiting interesting places. And I hope you're happy to be back at school with your friends now. Good luck this year!!

    Cheers,

    Leslie
